Via Vibrant Victoria, the Victoria Police Department is running a blog. The posts are mostly interesting incidents that police have been involved with. The tone is just-the-facts cute, bang-on for improving public relations.

Unfortunately, they don’t identify individual police officers. Still, I think it will have the intended affect of humanizing the VicPD force as a whole. The Canada Day post is particularly amusing.

  1. Are you shitting me? They were videotaping the crowds?

For the first time we used powerful 16 megapixel video cameras to keep watch over the Upper Causeway area.

Standard questions: how long is the footage retained and who has access to it? Can it be FOIPA’d and put online?

  2. Your questions are answered in a news release:

    • 60 days to 1 year
    • The cameras are available to “only authorized personnel”. The stored footage will be treated as evidence and controlled as such.
    • VicPD ran it by the Acting Privacy Czar
