Best Fringe Previews
At the Victoria Fringe preview last night each show got 2 minutes to provide an excerpt, talk about the show or do something unrelated to show off their talent.
Some comedy shows I’m more likely to watch based on their previews:
- Dave Morris is an Asshole
- Stole the show with a tongue-twister mashup!
- Gonads & Gametes
- “A jizz-packed splooge fest”
- Peter n’ Chris Save the World
- Mime comedy
- When the Killer Mutant Lizards Attack
- Satire of classic monster movies and military planning
And some of my speculative choices were confirmed:
- Pretty Monster
- Awesome black&white makeup
- Ginger Ninjas
- Best song of the night, but I hope the show is more about dancing?
- A Day in the Life of Miss Hiccup
- Weird and fun but not sophisticated dance
- Public Confessions of a Public Servant
- Fun, solid, but unrelated slam poem – Missie Peters knows how to use 2 minutes
The Tragical Comedy of Professor Punchinello appeared to be more Punch & Judy and less Sandman, so I’ll wait for a full review.
Best Bets of the Victoria Fringe Festival
As usual, the Victoria Fringe website and program are stupidly sorted by location rather than genre. If you have the technology, I’d recommend using the iOs app to review the shows.
There are less dance/physical theatre shows this year. Although some of the dance shows last year didn’t sell very well, I really appreciate Fringe as a venue for dramatic dance. So I will definitely go to all the physical theatre shows (except 7 (x1) Samurai because – don’t tell anyone! – I haven’t seen the movie).
I don’t generally enjoy comedic theatre, so I’m just going to go to whatever my friends are seeing unless I hear about something as awesome as last year’s Uncalled For Presents: Today Is All Your Birthdays. I’d like to see some drama shows in addition to my list below, but none of the ones this year have particularly good reviews online so I’m also waiting for buzz.
- 39
- Japanese science fiction in the genre of “Other” – how could you lose!?
- Ginger Ninjas
- I generally love Ingrid Hansen’s (SNAFU) dramatic dance and hate her comedic dance, but given that Pretty Little Instincts was my pick for last year’s best of show, I have high hopes for this.
- Pretty Monster
- Mily Mumford is a friend of mine and she’s weird, so this will definitely be interesting at the least.
- Public Confessions of a Public Servant
- I’ve seen Missie Peters perform a number of short works and she’s usually pretty entertaining plus the fact that this is personally relevant.
- A Day in the Life of Miss Hiccup
- This has some mixed reviews suggesting that you may need to actually like dance to enjoy this. As far as I can tell, it’s basically an examination of the Japanese concept of kawaii.
- The Tragical Comedy of Professor Punchinello
- I think this is an adaptation of a Neil Gaiman comic. The masks are scary.
