I’m a fan of the “emotional inspiration” method of design used at CMU by the EGP. You start by collecting things — music, art, poetry, sea shells, jade monkey skeletons, whatever — that generate an emotion in you with which you want to work. Eventually you reach a critical mass of feeling and the collection collapses into a singular idea.
