Favicon Funtimes

without comments

I’ve updated the blog’s icon — the favicon — to the old brain one I made, which I like more than the “fascist maple leaf” design.

Also, those of you who comment without a gravatar now have the brain icon as your default instead of the Photon theme’s silhouette-man.

New Link Stylez

with 2 comments

Reload, mouseover, and let me know what you think. Usability? Readability? Portability? Superability?

The foreground color probably shouldn’t be white for compatibility with stupid browsers — and Opera fails to render them correctly (sigh).

[Update: Now Chrome Webkit users get ultra-links styled with high tech CSS3 animations which "gracefully" fail-over to every platform, including IE.]

Google’s Worst Design Decision…

without comments

… Is the “tracking code” part of Analytics. Whenever I change themes I have to re-add it (though there’s probably a plugin I should be using, I just want something super lightweight).

The problem is getting the JS snippet again once you’ve already installed the bug on a site and want to do it again. Here’s the knowledgebase article and here are the steps:

  1. Log in to Google Analytics at http://www.google.com/analytics
  2. From the Overview page, select the account that has the profile for the tracking code you’re looking for, as the code is profile-specific.
  3. Select the profile from the accounts Overview page.
  4. From that profile’s Actions column, click Edit
  5. At the top right of the ‘Main Website Profile Information’ box, click Check Status
  6. Your tracking code can be copied and pasted from the text box in the Instructions for adding tracking section

Really? A six-step process? Really!? Worse: All of those links are surprisingly hard to see on those pages. They’re in weird places, as is the code: “Check Status” is what you have to click to get it.

Really? There’s no “copy snippet for this site to clipboard” button!? Really!? I’m only managing three sites and it’s a huge time drain to Google that every time a design changes — no matter how seldom that is. The steps are not easy to find either, which is why I’m linking them here — future reference and higher PageRank.

It might just be time to install random plugins, but I don’t wanna. [whaaaa!]

New Theme: Photon

with 8 comments

We’ve got a new minimalist, light-colored theme. Refresh the page a couple of times to get the new stylez.

I’m working on an actual WP theme for us, but rather than continue to torture our readers with baddazz hellfirez until it’s done I’m just going minimalist.

Search is now an expandy-box in the lop-left, and I’ve re-ordered the sidebar in what I consider to be the order-of-usefulness. Let me know if you [dis]agree. I’ve tested the RSS, and the layout on iPhone/iPad — but no browsers other than Safari [update: Fox, Chrome, and Opera on Snow Leopard check out, as does IE8 on Vista]. Also let me know if your milage varies.

I was inspired to finally change (after months of complaints) while digging through the Wayback Machine archive of MPF looking for a Hunter Thompson quote I was storing on our now-defunct wiki and seeing one of our old, nicer themes.

Todo: [update: Done!]

  1. Add per-post [edit] links for admins on the index (dammit!),
  2. Add post authors (dammit!), and
  3. Remove useless categories.

[Also fixed the bug where WP wouldn't display the date beside every post on a particular day (thx Ryley).]

Back!

without comments

I’m back from Vancouver and I picked up an external terabyte to store the fotos. I shot just under fifty gigs, and I have approx. three free on my main machine — time to step my game up.

Thanks go out to Dr. Z, his USB SD card reader, and his desktop box for providing temporary storage :)

After the raws are off the camera I’ll export the whole whack in a Lightroom HTML gallery and post the link, then get to processing them down to just the good ones.

SIN: Comments?

with 3 comments

I’m prototyping a new site for my company, SIN, to be released and sent out to clients shortly. I’ve put it up here to test. If you could comment on it that’d be great. Refresh a couple of times — it’s dynamic, using the same code as our rotating 404s to pick a background (one of which you might recognize) under the lightly-alpha’d content layer.

The background images are resizing poorly (they have resolution problems), but I’m working on it. I’m more interested in your take on the minimalism of it — I’m thinking of doing something very similar for MPF eventually.

The links won’t work either, but you’ll get an idea of my business lines :)

Try resizing the site — it shouldn’t break.

To-test: IE, iPhone, other platforms. Let me know if you see something busticated on your viewing platform, and if you could include a screenshot that’d help. Special thanks to Geoff for testing on Fox under Linux and over his projector. :)

SkyNet is Watching

without comments

I’m adding the Google Analytics bug to the site again to get an idea of our traffic. I just submitted the B-Rhymes interview to BB and I want to see what happens.

ThemeTest

without comments

I’m testing a full-custom theme here. It’s alpha — ie, broke as heck and ugly — but that’s where construction is happening.

I’ve only tested it on OSX/Safari, so no guarantees it’ll look at all reasonable to you.

The Errors 404 — Found Around Town

with 2 comments

Instead of redirecting our feeds to Atom I added some images and code to randomize and beautify (?) our 404 error page.

It’s all automagic, so if you…

A. Take an image of something 404-ish,
B. Have upload access, and
C. Drop it into /images/404

… then it’ll be added to the rotation with no other setup. The shots currently spinning are some 404s I’ve spotted around town in the last 24 hours. Keep refreshing a broken link to see both.
