» OMG — TC JUMPS SHARK LOL
Via Will: Jack Knox from The Times Colonist goes rogue and declares that if you’re not employed by a media conglomerate you shouldn’t have a voice.
No one should care what old curmudgeons think about the Internet. Good luck spending your twilight years employed in the newspaper industry, Jack. Yeah, that’s right — We all know about your conflict of interest on this one. At least free content isn’t commercially biased.
Instead of trying to build a wall of privilege to save your own skin, get with the program and ask for better moderation. The TC could be asking the CBC to, for example, disemvowel comments, or provide better netiquette education. Instead of social good they shoot for higher profits — violent, hateful appeals to privilege and “the good old days” sell more papers, especially in a geriatric market like Victoria.

[Hahahahah, j/k. Here's Don's original comment:]
The Wikipedia article for disemvowelling is bad – after reading it I know how to disemvowel text but I am not sure when it is used or how it is used to censor spammers, trolls, and criticizers.
A few days ago I mentioned to someone at work that I think the reader comments on the CBC News site are the dumbest on the Internet, which is saying something. And predictable – if the story involves the government, 95% of the comments will be about how evil Harper is; if the story involves a crime, the comments will be about how the criminals should be lynched; if the story involves police, they will be about how the police are all cowards because they won’t challenge suspects to a “fair fight” instead of using tactics like greater numbers, nightsticks, tasers, or guns to get the upper hand.

To be fair, it looks like he’s getting his opinions on internet discussion from the CBC commenters. With the possible exception of the YouTube comments, CBC is probably the biggest cesspool for stupid I’ve ever seen. The only thing I’ve ever posted on stupid_free (actually, sf_drama, but it’s the same) was CBC comments. In response to a news story about one of the more important findings from the International Polar Year, the 30 comments included: someone saying scientists should stop discovering things because then they’ll have to rewrite textbooks and she doesn’t want to buy new textbooks, someone saying he thought “science was settled” so they shouldn’t be making discoveries, a comparison to the Holocaust, and demands that all new species be destroyed.
I have also seen a story of about the death of a beloved zoo polar bear from old age turn into abortion-wank.
Of course, the fact that he thinks CBC commenters=the internet shows how out of touch he is.
