The easy part’s over. Now I’m designing a logo.
I’m a fan of the “emotional inspiration” method of design used at CMU by the EGP. You start by collecting things — music, art, poetry, sea shells, jade monkey skeletons, whatever — that generate an emotion in you with which you want to work. Eventually you reach a critical mass of feeling and the collection collapses into a singular idea.
My company is coming from a place of Celtic identity, Ghostbusters animated cartoons, and the Insane Clown Posse. Here’s some of the stuff in my bin:

I worked for a small company in highschool. I remember one of the founders telling me a story of going into her current job and asking around “Is anybody good at drawing? I need an octopus logo for this company I’m starting.” One of her coworkers responded, “If this is a real company, shouldn’t you hire a graphic designer and get it done right?” And so she did.
The graphic designer who did the logo contract eventually ended up as a full-time employee.
