BC local government is made up of municipalities, regional districts, the Islands Trust, the Vancouver Park Board and school districts (the UBC Endowment Lands committees are advisory, not governing; First Nations governments represent off-reserve members so they’re not considered local).

The Local Government Elections Task Force is developing a new model [for local government elections] and started soliticing feedback today.

Corporations can vote in municipal elections in BC‽

Yes, elections should be administered by Elections BC. I looked into the situation here and found that municipal elections are administered by the upper-tier municipality (county or regional municipality) for themselves and for their lower-tier municipalities (townships, towns, cities). Translation: In Ontario, staff of the regional district government run an election for their regional district positions, municipal positions, school district representatives, etc. So I’d prefer to have Elections Ontario administer that instead.

I think that federal, provincial, and local elections should all be held on separate dates, so that only the people actually interested in that level of government will vote.

More election dates means more time off work! That’s effectively an incremental corporate tax as they’re subsidizing the cost of participation. The higher-ups will probably fight it tooth and nail :)

I’m pretty sure corporations can’t vote now, but the Task Force explicitly mentions that they’re considering it.

I am against voting rights for non-sentient entities.

[...] The members of the Local Government Elections Task Force were all appointed by Cabinet. Apparently some people[who?] consider the Task Force to have a partisan slant. To maintain my squeaky-clean image, my employer asked me to remove my personal opinions from my post on the Task Force. [...]
