I hate “careers” pages on news sites more than I hate actual office environments — ie, a whole-fucking-lot — but MSNBC has a list of the most annoying buzzy biz-speak phrases out there:

Thinking outside the box (21 percent)
Let’s touch base (20)
Blue sky thinking (19)
Blamestorming (16) (sitting down and working out whose fault something is)
Drill down to a more granular level (15) (Look into something in more detail)
Let’s not throw pies in the dark (15) (we need a plan rather than a haphazard approach)
I’ve got that on my radar (13)
Push the envelope (12)
Bring your A-game (11) (Be ready to do something to best of ability)
Get all your ducks in a row (11)

Just reading those makes me anxious. It turns out that you can’t find creativity and original thought in business books, spreadsheets, or meetings — oh noes, where to look‽

(Interrobang! “Synergizing transmedia touchpoints” is the worst bizspeak I’ve ever heard — yours?)

  2. They did strike me as pretty old — but business culture is stagnant.

  3. I’m happy that I’ve never heard most of these at the “office environment” where I am employed. In fact, I think of these I’ve only heard “drill down”. I have heard people use “get all our ducks in a row” rarely, but never at work – I thought it was just a folksy saying.

  4. Yeah, I’ve never heard any of these either. I call bullshit.
