Hank is the grandpappy of modern country. Other people think Johnny Cash is the #1 country singer of all time, but he thought Hank was:

I’m working on a concept for a photo shoot and can’t think of any rock to listen to while writing up the script. No other form of music quite captures “down-and-out” as authentically as old country tunes do. That song, for example, hit #1 just as Hank died of a whiskey-and-morphine overdose in the back of a hired Caddy, and it reeks of existential angst.

That said, Honky Tonk Badonkadonk and Hillbilly Deluxe are pretty awesome too.

  1. I hadn’t heard that one, I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive, before. I thought that phrase originated later than that. It’s definitely “down and out”; it made me so lonesome I could cry.
