For whom are we saving the planet? Kids?
If you concede that it would be the height of viscousness to bring children into such an unspeakably cruel world, then environmental problems become a whole lot easier.
Namely, BP and Transocean start looking like nicely undervalued investments.
But then, it’s raining inside today.

Every generation thinks the future will be unspeakably cruel.
No person can will the extinction of their species.

Is the assumption of an “unspeakably cruel world” just for the sake of the argument? Certainly the wild world is extremely cruel for many animals. And extreme human cruelty does happen all the time. But for the majority of people the world is not cruel. The contention that this is a “cruel world” seems not just incorrect, but deeply wrong.

@Don: The “unspeakably cruel” phrasing is a reference to Woody Allen’s Whatever Works, so I’m just taking it as given in that usage.
It’s a point of view I suppose, and very possibly totally misjudged.

Clearly, I need to watch more Woody Allen films.
