I’m pissed. I left my lens cap at Dr. Z’s over the Olympic weekend and he mailed it back to me. Here’s how it arrived:

Or rather: Didn’t. The envelope was empty. The image on the left shows how I was robbed, the one on the right shows some curious stamping — apparently the envelope, which took almost a week to arrive, made a stop in Fraud Prevention.

Too bad it didn’t make a stop in Theft Prevention.

The first two things I remember learning about the post were, first, that opening other people’s mail was a cardinal sin. Second, that postmen were the most unrepentant of sinners — thieves, all: “Never mail anything valuable,” our parents told us.

Of course, this was all before postal workers got their reputation as violent psychopaths.

Email is driving this backwards institution under, and good riddance to bad rubbish. “You can’t send physical objects via email,” their line of last defence goes (not yet anyway).

And it’s clear you can’t send them via the post either.

Maybe I’m applying my hostile attribution bias here. Maybe the cap fell out because of a sorting machine and it was routed to fraud prevention for investigation, and cleared there.

So: Canada Post is either full of criminals, or incompetent. Where’s my explanation and apology?

In any case, I don’t know how an individual or business could trust them. Why risk it? Why wouldn’t I just use FedEx or similar — someone who actually cares about customer service?

  1. I’ve had numerous things stolen from the mail including a memory stick I sent to a friend of mine, who also has had many of the handmade jewelry she makes stolen. All of it was stolen the exact same way as you, with the slit in the envelope, however I have never seen that stamp on any of them. It’s very frustrating, especially since it appears to be occurring while in possession of Canada Post, and as someone who can barely afford to mail stuff via Canada Post, let alone FedEx, its not like there are many alternative options.

  3. [...] Clearly will ship Canada Post or FedEx. Same price, but FedEx delivers four days earlier and who know if Canada Post will rob you. That ain’t no kinda choice to [...]

  4. [...] Unless there’s some way to validly collect signatures online? Anyone know? Remember: You can’t use Canada Post — they’ll steal the petitions. [...]

  5. I am a self-employed,disabled diabetic on CPP and ODSP monthly pensions. My CPP and ODSP January 27 pension cheques are extremely late in arriving.
I need these cheques-as it is the end of the month,I’m financially struggling. spoke to my postal worker who delivers mail for my apt, she keeps trying to cover her ass. I blame both CUPE’s anti-semitic thug,Sid Ryan,as well as Canada Post for poor service. Monthly cheques late,or never delivered,Wheel-trans membership cards never arrived. Canada Post,it’s lousy union and management are a third world, corrupt service and organization.

  6. CANADA POST SUCKS DONKEY BALLS. Sorry had to vent. I ordered something from amazon.ca with their free shipping option which used to be delivered excellently via UPS. I guess amazon.ca went on the cheap and now use canadapost as their free shipping partner.

Anyway delivery was scheduled to be on February 2nd, 2011 you know the day of the overrated and overexaggerated “SNOW STORM” across the GTA? Prior to the 2nd last tracking activity was jan 31st as arrival scan.

Next activity was Friday Feb 4th, 2011 with “out for delivery” stamped at 8:04 am. Great I thought until I refreshed the page a few minutes later. Next activity was 8:07 in which it stated “attempted delivery. notice card left…”

Right now I’m thinking holy shit! Canada post drivers drive lamborghini’s. They can drive from the sorting center to my house in 3 minutes even though my work is right across from the sorting center and I know my work is 10 minutes away minimum from my house.

Next activity 8:14 “item available at post office”. I then go to the post office down my street and they can’t find any parcels matching my tracking# or my street address.

I then go to work and come back in the evening only to notice the card has been left in my mail superbox on the corner of my neighbourhood. The card itself was half assed with only my name on it and no indication when i can pick it up. On top of that they left it at another post office which is 15 minutes from my house instead of leaving it at the post office down my street which is 2 minutes away!

To the driver of canada post who fucked this up. FUCK YOU. I know why you did this you FAT FUCK. It’s super bowl weekend. I hope you choke on that 20lbs single order of wings you ordered and DIE!!!!!

  8. I am waiting for a delivery that had an E.T.A of 24th and it is now the 31st and still no update in tracking from the original departure scan. I’m betting that someone at Canada Post felt they needed the merchandise more than I do.

  10. [...] postal workers seek public’s support”? I think they’re disastrously overestimating the goodwill Canadians have towards lazy, incompetent [...]

  11. They do suck. I ordered a straight razor online and they locked the postal workers out, forced them into a new bargaining agreement, now won’t pay the workers overtime to get the backlog going again. It could be three more weeks!

I’ll pay 20X more for any kind of shipping other than them. They SUCK!
