ยป Best Bets of the Victoria Fringe Festival
As usual, the Victoria Fringe website and program are stupidly sorted by location rather than genre. If you have the technology, I’d recommend using the iOs app to review the shows.
There are less dance/physical theatre shows this year. Although some of the dance shows last year didn’t sell very well, I really appreciate Fringe as a venue for dramatic dance. So I will definitely go to all the physical theatre shows (except 7 (x1) Samurai because – don’t tell anyone! – I haven’t seen the movie).
I don’t generally enjoy comedic theatre, so I’m just going to go to whatever my friends are seeing unless I hear about something as awesome as last year’s Uncalled For Presents: Today Is All Your Birthdays. I’d like to see some drama shows in addition to my list below, but none of the ones this year have particularly good reviews online so I’m also waiting for buzz.
- 39
- Japanese science fiction in the genre of “Other” – how could you lose!?
- Ginger Ninjas
- I generally love Ingrid Hansen’s (SNAFU) dramatic dance and hate her comedic dance, but given that Pretty Little Instincts was my pick for last year’s best of show, I have high hopes for this.
- Pretty Monster
- Mily Mumford is a friend of mine and she’s weird, so this will definitely be interesting at the least.
- Public Confessions of a Public Servant
- I’ve seen Missie Peters perform a number of short works and she’s usually pretty entertaining plus the fact that this is personally relevant.
- A Day in the Life of Miss Hiccup
- This has some mixed reviews suggesting that you may need to actually like dance to enjoy this. As far as I can tell, it’s basically an examination of the Japanese concept of kawaii.
- The Tragical Comedy of Professor Punchinello
- I think this is an adaptation of a Neil Gaiman comic. The masks are scary.

Probably a little late to be telling you this, but although we haven’t made any return trips back to Victoria lately, Uncalled For has launched a brand new website with a new web video every Tuesday. Some are taken from the scripts for live shows like Today Is All Your Birthdays, others are originals. So if you are looking for something as awesome as Today Is All Your Birthdays, you might find it at WeAreUncalledFor.com (or our youtube channel: youtube.com/weareuncalledfor)
